Virgo Full Moon Deep Dive

It was Kung Fu master Bruce Lee who said, “Better to be a warrior in the garden than a gardener in a war.”

This quote is deceptively deep, especially as we approach the Virgo Full Moon on March 7^{th .} Virgo, the zodiac sign associated with the month of September, is the archetypal earth goddess that collects her harvest and makes her way into the earth to live out the winter in warmth and style. Virgo is associated with flowers and gardens and the natural world, as well as an overall focus on planting seeds, tending to and caring for living things, and relying on natural forms of abundance that are quite literally rooted in the earth- or rooted in reality, at the least.

But it’s not all sunshine and flowers.

This Full Moon also hinges on some major warrior medicine, asking us if we’ve been putting in the reps, working hard, getting all the data, assessing objective reality, and pursuing excellence, even if it’s just in a peacetime garden. A warrior’s mind is vigilant, resilient and prepared to problem-solve. It keeps an eye on the garden, does the math, and ensures that the stores harvested for winter are deep enough to support life during the coming scarcity.

After all, as the Game of Thrones kids put it, “Winter is coming.”

Planting seeds and setting intentions

Leading up to March 7^th, it’s crucial that we plant the seeds we want to harvest in Virgo season this September. As in the case of our TOTEM Flower Essence garden, some of these seeds might be literal, and to this end I encourage you all to start a garden on your balcony, roof deck, back yard or community plot! But these are also metaphorical seeds, ones that may take the next six months or ten years to germinate and grow and yield fruit, ultimately manifesting in our material reality.

This is also a critical window in which to set powerful intentions, committing ourselves to consistently working towards our goals and meeting our spirit guides halfway with our best efforts. After all, it’s been my experience that spirit guides help those that help themselves.

This Virgo Full Moon- with several other interesting astrological transits occurring later this month- is demanding that we get back in sync with the natural order. Get grounded. Get organized. Get consistent. Hold ourselves accountable. Build real relationships. Put in a hard day’s work.

And be honest about our capabilities and progress.

Now is the moment we plant a garden. We sow seeds. We water and weed and remain vigilant. We learn crucially important stuff along the way. And we grow real, substantive nourishment and medicine and value that cannot be swept away with a change in corporate ownership or shareholder sentiment.

Resiliency and symbiosis

And this is the first step in debunking the myths of our shared social fabric. There are no shortcuts. There are no tips or tricks that empower you to circumnavigate the laws of nature. What goes up must come down. Gardens go dormant in winter. But the natural cycle, for as slow and frustrating as it may feel in the moment, offers unmatched positives: stability, resiliency and symbiosis.

Because the garden grows slowly over time, it is stable.

Because the garden is a complex, living system, it is inherently resilient.

Because the garden is rooted in reality, it produces real value.

We eat what we cultivate. We cultivate what we plant and water. We plant what our soul craves.

And when we veer from this simple, natural model, we find ourselves very far from our spiritual home. We put ourselves in exile, separate from our own nature and what brings us joy. We find ourselves cannibalizing that which previously served as our foundation, thoughtlessly engaged in a race to the bottom thinking we’re on our way to the mountain top.
