Over the holiday break, I binged a whole bunch of great podcasts I had been saving up for my time off. The most engrossing, informative and educational? The Dream, a multi-season and incredibly-researched podcast detailing the scope of the scams and cults and cons that permeate the American self-help and wellness landscapes, exploiting the mythical (and elusive) “American Dream”. Among the many factoids I picked up from The Dream— like how Madeleine Albright made millions as an Herbalife salesman while acting as our country’s Secretary of State— was a stunning data point: Americans spend $5 billion a year on people we think can show us how to be better—and happier and more fulfilled-- people. These “experts” are not therapists or financial planners, but rather gurus and life coaches of all stripes and spots.
