“Ideas are like fish. If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you’ve got to go deeper. Down deep, the fish are more powerful and more pure. They’re huge and abstract. And they’re very beautiful.” -David Lynch

When I was an innovation professional working in corporate real estate, I would quote David Lynch a lot. He’s kind of a colossus of creativity, and certainly an iconoclastic move maker. His book, Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity, served as one of the foundational resources for my approach to innovation and, specifically, how I would coach teams to cultivate their own creativity.

The executive summary of the book? That ideas cannot be forced. That we do not, in fact, create ideas. They are not self-generated within our own minds. Instead, we catch ideas— just like we catch fish.

And, as with fish and fishing, if we want to catch ideas we need to go where the ideas are: the pure, deep, expansive waters of the woo.

Full Moon in Pisces

Funnily enough, these are the same waters we wade into when we do psychic work: the very same body of metaphorical water we tap when we scry or journey or interpret tarot cards.

The only “difference” is we’re hoping to catch some psychic fish, instead of creative fish.

And, in truth, they’re all the same kind of fish.

Many of our greatest artists— from musicians to writers to painters— talk extensively about the process of channeling their work. They emphasize their relationship with their muse: the spiritual entity that provides them with their creative starting blocks.

This August 31st’s Pisces Full Moon is all about wading into the deep waters, engaging our respective muses to assist us in catching the big, shiny, pure fish that dwell within.

This Pisces Full Moon is also a literal Blue Moon, making it the second Full Moon of August this year— and reinforcing the blue, watery theme of this most watery of astrological signs.

Because Blue Moons are so rare, this Pisces Full Moon is demanding that we pay attention to all things mystical and creative and synchronistic: our subconscious, our dreams, and the spiritual currents and creatures all around us.

We don’t know what fish we’re going to catch, but we can have some certainty that they’re going to be fascinating, inspiring, and relevant.
